Business Development Director, R&D Sector– London, Ontario

MITACS is Canada’s leading not-for-profit society dedicated to high-quality research that brings innovative research solutions to industrial problems. The MITACS mandate covers the mathematical sciences as well as science and engineering, health sciences, and the social sciences.
MITACS is renowned for its ability to identify emerging economic and social issues, bring together academic scientists and their industrial counterparts, manage the research process, and deploy leading-edge technology. MITACS collaborates closely with over 500 scientists at 62 partner universities and more than 300 companies across Canada.

MITACS has launched a very successful program called MITACS Accelerate, which provides internship opportunities for graduate students and post doctoral fellows, to do research with industry partners.

MITACS aims to hire a Business Development Director, R&D sector,  in London, Ontario.  This position is responsible to develop the internship program in their region, as well as promote several other MITACS programs. 

The successful candidate should have strong scientific expertise, business development abilities, and a commitment to facilitating the development of multi-disciplinary research collaborations with non-academic partners. Reporting to the VP, Business Development and working closely with the MITACS scientific staff, this position will be strategically placed to help with all aspects of the ACCELERATE Canada program.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Find internship opportunities for students/professors by connecting university researchers with industry on research projects
  • Assist with the application process
  • Introduce companies to collaborations with academia for advanced research
  • Create and maintain a network of partners in the private and public sectors
  • Collaborate with MITACS staff to organize scientific events including aspects related to networking with clients, scientific planning, logistics, and funding
  • Manage relationships with key stakeholders including university researchers, technology transfer representatives, industry organizations and industry partners
  • Provide support to MITACS researchers on commercialization and IP issues
  • Liaise with other MITACS employees on business development issues
  • Support the development of other MITACS programs, as needed
  • Successful individuals will have demonstrated abilities to develop relationships with the academic, private and public sectors. The position requires strong analytical, communications, and interpersonal skills, and candidates must be self-starters who are comfortable working in a team setting.

A Masters degree or PhD in science or engineering is a necessity.  Business development skills are a definite asset.
